Time
travel: Native American Reserve of Metlakatla –
Travel back in time to a community rooted in the
past. Metlakatla, meaning “calm water,” is more than
a hundred years old and situated 15 miles southeast
of Ketchikan. It is America’s only Native American
Reserve, and Southeast Aviation offers the state’s
only air and land tour to this 19th century
village. We depart Kethchikan by seaplane and fly
up Nichols Passage to Port Chester Harbor home to
the community of Metlakatla, Alaska. As spectacular
as the flight to Metlakatla is, what awaits you on
the ground is a very unique visit to a quaint island
community that is the only Tsimpshean Indian
settlement in America. |
 |
Our expertly guided island tour
provides you with memorable experiences of Metlakatla and a
30-minute performance of native dancing and traditional
music, as well as a visit to Metlakatla’s authentic and
mysterious totems, which have been impressively carved by
local Native American Artists.

Enjoy a unique and
mouth-watering salmon bake where chefs prepare
fresh-caught salmon, glazed and baked to perfection
over an open alder flame – a Metlakatla experience
that cannot be duplicated for its authenticity,
landscape and culinary wonder. Visit the Duncan
Cottage Museum, the original home of founding
missionary William Duncan; the artists’ village on
the waterfront, including Laughing Berry Design and
House of the Wolf for native treasures, jewelry,
authentic alder and cedar carvings and other unique
Alaskan gifts; and Le Sha’ax, a clan longhouse used
for traditional Tshimshean ceremonies. In short,
this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime tour, offered
only by Southeast Aviation. |
